Gen Z vows to ‘cancel’ their parents’ votes in new presidential election trending TikTok

With the presidential election just 10 days away, a new TikTok trend is helping to get Gen Z to the polls.

Zoomers are making viral videos vowing to fill out the ballot to “cancel” the votes cast by their parents.

While most TikTok creators don’t reveal which candidate they’re voting for, some have said they’ll cast their vote for Kamala Harris in order to “cancel” their parents’ votes for Donald Trump.

A recent poll by NBC News found that Harris has a strong lead among Gen Z voters.

“Just a father and daughter duo to cancel each other’s votes,” wrote one creator, who reached millions of views with her clip.

“I’m canceling my parents’ vote today,” TikTok user Abigail Grace declared under a video showing her getting ready for the voting booth.

While the act of “cancelling” votes may seem toxic at first, the easy trend means families can get through this divisive election season.

First-time voter McKenzie Owens, 19, told NBC News the trend could make others realize “that people can live together even though nowadays politics can also drive people apart.”

Gen. Zer of Pennsylvania, who posted about “cancelling” her boyfriend’s vote online, declined to reveal who she would vote for this election, but said she and her partner are able to respect each other’s views.

Becca Puga, a 28-year-old Utah resident, also joked online about her father’s ballot cancellation, saying he would find the trend “funny,” not offensive.

“Even though they’re very conservative, very Christian, they raised me to have my own opinions and values ​​and give me the space to do that,” Puga told NBC News. “So when I posted it, I wasn’t worried about any family members seeing it because my dad would think it was funny.”

Some users, however, and putting their own spin on the trend. Instead of bragging about “nullifying” dissenting votes, they’re bragging that they’re on the same political page as their family members or partners.

“Going off the polls, except neither of us canceled each other’s votes,” wrote the creator named Jess, who wrote the clip, “Cancelling my fiancés vote out??? Couldn’t be me .”

“Voting against your partner? It couldn’t be us,” TikToker Alexis Voss wrote in the caption of her video.

“Cancel the votes? Cancel that wedding sis lol,” joked one commenter.

“The father of my children is voting against my vote. That’s when I decided I didn’t want to be with him anymore. Canceling votes is crazy to me,” said another viewer.

“I’m safe from getting my husband to cancel my vote,” Florida resident Robin Nickell wrote on TikTok, praising her husband for voting for Harris and Tim Walz and calling it “a dream come true.”

The 49-year-old told NBC News that the pair have always been “aligned in political views.”

“It was kind of a man appreciation post,” she said of her viral video.
